Universe, you heard me. Why was I so afraid to listen?

As I scrolled through my Instagram feed on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday, I came across a beautiful quote that had been posted by my teacher: Guru Jagat; founder of Ra Ma Institute in LA, about a 6-month Kundalini training created to empower and ignite women. It was called “Immense Grace”. A voice in my head said, "You must do this."

Without needing to have any other encouragement or know all the logistics, I signed up on the spot, paid in full, and booked my flight for a weekend kickoff retreat in the Sequoias just a few days away. I knew with absolute certainty that it was going to be a powerful experience.

 

The entire weekend was spent with nearly 50 amazing women and it was an experience more powerful than anything I have ever been part of. Each morning began at 4am for sadhana, daily morning practice, followed by many hours in powerful kundalini kriya, the purpose of which was to ignite confidence in our own divine feminine selves and celebrate each other.

 

 

The nature around us seemed as if it noticed our presence and rejoiced in it. The world’s oldest tree, of 2200 years, kept us company as we meditated. After our weekend Kundalini marathon, rain began to grace the beautiful Sequoias, which had, until then, been in severe drought.

 

 

I had stayed within the limits of my comfort zone until the final night of our retreat. It was a beautiful evening. The perfect evening for a goddess dance-off! For this ceremony, each woman dressed up in her favorite gown and made an offering to the altar along with a special dance or song to the tribe who watched us in awe and jubilation.

 

 

I had never been so petrified to express myself in my entire life!

 

 

I knew I would have to step outside of my boundaries and allow myself to be free. We all came together to celebrate: to dance, sing, and express ourselves in the most feminine, vulnerable, confident, and elegant way that we knew how. At the end of the ceremony, I felt completely cracked open, supported, and fully liberated.

 

 

It was bittersweet to leave such a wonderful experience and such an empowering group of women.

 

 

Before my flight back to New York, I woke up for an early daily sadhana and then joined many of the other women from the retreat at Guru Jagat's class at Ra Ma. After a set that fired up the core to ignite power and radiance, Guru Jagat played mantras that completely crystallized all of the feelings that had transpired over the weekend.

 

 

During the second mantra, we placed our palms on our heart, right over left, and chanted. Instantly, I felt as if my entire heart had burst open.

 

 

I began crying tears of relief and happiness.

 

 

The only way to describe the incredible sensation I felt in that moment was comparable to what happens when you take muffins out of the oven and the tops gently crisp, puff, and begin to crack open.

 

 

The warmth I felt was new. It was so comforting. It felt like home. It felt like peace. Most importantly, it felt like a place I was always meant to be.

 

 

An unknown, gentle yet booming voice spoke to me: "Fern, you never have to be afraid. Everything you've ever wanted is waiting for you. It's all so close. You just need to listen. It's all here. You are destined for greatness. There is no need to worry, ever. I've got you. I always have, I always will."

 

 

At this moment, an image appeared in my mind. It was a very clear picture.

 

 

It was my future.

 

 

There was a big, white house on a hill in Malibu, where I would live and host yoga retreats and full moon meditations. “Of course. A white house,” I responded, with a smile.

 

 

Then, I saw the figure of a handsome, chiseled man. “Who is he? What is his name?” I asked the voice with full curiosity.

 

 

The voice replied:”Shhh... Be patient. I will show you. He is so close. He knows who you are and is waiting for you.”

 

 

There were visions of love, marriage, of children. I could feel relief wash over my entire body.

 

 

That’s when I began to wonder why I ever doubted myself.

 

 

Why did I ever think that I didn't deserve to have this?

 

 

Why have I been so afraid of my own power and my own success?

 

 

I give and give and give to everyone else around me; as a teacher I often put everyone else’s needs before mine.

 

 

I often forget that I, too, deserve love and happiness.

 

 

The voice answered:

 

 

“Why would you think you couldn’t have wealth, love, and beauty? You give and serve so many people. You are doing big work on this planet. This is why I brought you into this world. You are a saint and you need to keep going. Stay strong. Do not be afraid. You are being held and guided, you always are. You always will be.

 

I am going to give you everything you’ve ever wanted.

 

I’ve always tried to reach you, but you were to busy to listen. I am so glad I was finally able to.”

 

 

My legs became paralyzed. I had to force them out of easy pose, shake them, and set them into savasana as I settled down on my back. Breathing deeply, I felt almost as if light beams were shooting out of my fingers and toes. Tears continued to stream down my face. I felt like a completely new woman. All of my past insecurities and self-doubt had been transmuted into confidence and grace.

 

 

Over the past year, I experienced a complete transformation. I had left a corporate job in finance and a 6 year relationship; all to pursue my dream career as a yoga instructor and wellness entrepreneur, leading retreats and speaking around the world.

 

 

I’ve made the move across the country, from New York to Los Angeles, to share my work and passion for healing and collaboration. My passion has been to guide teachers, entrepreneurs and healers in the same practices that helped me crack my own “shell” and to help others get over their neurosis, fears, and self-sabotage.

 

 

It is time for us all to uplift and empower each other so we can step into the radiance that is our birthright. When we step into our radiance with confidence, our power to inspire and ignite each other and everyone around us is magnified. This, we absolutely must remember.

Do you sing in the shower? {The science behind the healing magic}

Singing is liberating. Music sets you free. Beyond that, it has the power to heal heartbreak, activate your thyroid, and clear the garbage from your mind. 

Sound therapy is one of a growing number of subtle-energy therapies that make up the field of vibrational medicine. According to the law of physics, everything vibrates: the chair you’re sitting in, the food you eat, the rocks and trees.

We can alter consciousness by changing the chemical composition of the fluids in the brain. 

There are eighty-four meridian points on the upper palate of a human’s mouth. One can feel the upper palate with the tongue and experience its different surfaces. There are two rows of meridian points on the upper palate and on the gum behind the upper teeth. The tongue stimulates those meridian points, and they in turn stimulate the hypothalamus which makes the pineal gland radiate. When the pineal radiates, it creates a pulse in the pituitary gland. When this happens to the pituitary, the entire glandular system secretes. Then the chemical composition of the brain becomes balanced, automatically changing one’s outlook on life. - 3HO Foundation

The concept that sound affects the health of your mind and body is not new. Chanting and mantra recitation have been part of Hindu spirituality and the healing power of yoga for thousands of years. Given the recent interest in mind-body medicine, it’s not surprising that this ancient tradition is experiencing a modern-day renaissance.

Chanting is part of my lineage, yet after so many years of being afraid of my voice, I'm finally realizing how healing it truly is...

I never really understood why my mom would run around the house as a child, humming, singing, and chanting words I didn't quite understand. She often would sing "Govindah" and other mantra that she loved, and sang them to me as a baby in lieu of the typical lullabies. I thought she was bat-shit crazy! 

Years later, I respect her and have so much deep gratitude for the high vibration she channeled to me so early in my evolution. 

As I've deepened my yoga practice over the past few years, I have gravitated towards Kundalini yoga, particularly due to the energetic and physical shifts I have experienced from my daily practice (sadhana).

For me, singing Kundalini mantra has been a way to really feel comfortable, supported, and protected. I feel enchanted by the sound current, I feel healed. It resets me vibrationally, clearing away any of the pain and connecting me to the universal sound current. One of the reasons I love practicing yoga in a group is that together the sound current multiplies and the collective power of our voices magnify. 

Kundalini Yoga has helped me to heal the energetic imbalances in my throat by releasing the stagnation that has inflammed my endocrine system, and has taken me on a deep, introspective journey. I am finally learning how to free my voice, to love the highs, the lows, and the off-pitched sounds all the same. By allowing my throat chakra to express freely, by opening this passage, I am allowing the kundalini to move from my heart up into the higher centres of ajna (third-eye) and sahasrara (crown). THIS is LIBERATION. 

Traditional Kundalini yoga techniques are the pillars of my Thyroid.Yoga™ method, which I have created to promote healthy hormone equilibrium, including movement focused on the meridians related to the thyroid and hormone function, breath and specific sound/vibrational techniques for the throat, and of course, mantra.

Try this simple exercise daily as part of your self-care for release of thyroid blockages.

 

MEDITATION ON THE SOUND CURRENT ONG (suggested for Thyroid)

Yogi Bhajan, 26 September 1974

Sit with a straight spine. Chant ONG 12 times per minute for 1-2 minutes. Inhale quickly between each call. Then chant rapidly at a rate of about ten repetitions every five seconds. Then chant powerfully for 1 minute. Relax and meditate within.

COMMENTS:

ONG is the sound of infinity as it is heard through the conch shell when we put in the breath of life. The sound of the conch is only an expanded ONG. When a disciplined yogi practices this at the center of the nose, his entire brain gets a very powerful vibration, then the nectar starts running.

If you start coughing while practicing this, it is a signal that the thyroid gland is having trouble taking the pressure of the chant. The thyroid gland is responsible for keeping you young and beautiful. 

This sound gives a man three things: power, beauty, and youth. Through the time man started writing about it and reading about it, but he stopped practicing it, and the result was that he even forgot what the sound is. Then man became a shopper, going and begging from place to place, asking for peace. He forgot that what he was asking for was already within himself.

 

“Every element of the universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested to us as light, sound and energy.  The human sense perceive only a fraction of the infinite range of vibration, so it is difficult to comprehened that the Word mentioned in the bible is actually the totality of vibration which underlies and sustains all creation.  A person can tune his or her own consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra.  By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration.   It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument.  In other words, as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.” ~Yogi Bhajan

For years I misinterpreted my relationship patterns {and how that made me very, very sick}

Last night, I enjoyed dinner with my teacher and mentor Donnalynn Civello, the woman who shined a light on me over 6 years ago when I had come into her yoga class as a very timid yogi, when my life was a hot mess and I was completely disconnected from my mind and body. A time when I was very unhealthy and didn’t really know why my body was so off but had a light inside me that needed to be uncovered - she called me out on it. She’s seen me through a complete transformation, has been by my side through the hardest decisions of my life - leaving my cushy corporate job and a 6-year relationship to someone - and now, is one of my best friends. So when she sees me repeat the lessons I should have already learned, she speaks up, she has my back. She calls me out on the B.S. every single time. She won’t let me sabotage myself.

 

As humans, sometimes we don’t let ourselves enjoy all of the magic we deserve because we are scared of having everything we want - and then losing it all.

 

I have been blessed with a pretty awesome life. I’m deeply grateful for all of the abundance - a thriving wellness and yoga practice that just keeps on evolving in the sweetest ways, a full schedule of clients, loving students, an amazing and ever-expanding community, so many wonderful opportunities to collaborate, travel, and explore the world, a beautiful home and soon to be new home on the west coast...but one this is missing.

 

Perhaps it is the thing that I desire the most:

A loving relationship with a life-long partner who wants to share all of this with me, and share his life too.

The one who gets me and loves the work I’m doing, one who is doing his own work that he is so deeply passionate about, and one who wants to grow together, is honest, open, deeply committed to his own health and vitality, is in his power and is making the planet a better place through his generosity and compassion, and someday wants to start a family together.

 

There, I said it.

 

I’m so good at asking for everything I want - and getting it! That’s precisely why my life has been so charmed.

I’m not some superhuman - I just know the secret of manifesting.

I ask the Universe, I ask the people I need to ask in order to make things happen, and then I show up to my karmic assignments and do the work.

 

I’m a confident and driven woman. When I get a “no,” I let that door close and I accept that I need to keep doing my work, and that the “yes” is on it’s way in a better form when I show up and do the work I need to do. And that has served me well in every single aspect of my life.

 

Yet I haven’t shown up in this way in relationships. Every single situation, something has been stuck.


 

In my 6-year relationship, which I ended last December, I was with a man I loved very deeply, but our relationship could not work because we weren’t evolving together and I was so scared to speak up and communicate what I needed in the relationship.

 

I thought I had a pattern dating “emotionally unavailable” men. It was not them who were unavailable, it was my own voice which I was too afraid to speak.

 

I never asked for what I wanted - when it came to intimacy, emotional support, or just what I needed in order to feel heard and loved.

In my last relationship, I never told him how I was feeling, and I allowed all the emotions and feelings collect until finally they weighed me down so much that my body got very, very sick.

 

Why? I was just too scared to speak up.

 

Completely frightened to the point where I would sacrifice my own needs because I didn’t want to risk rejection, judgement, or an argument. So I completely put my own needs in the depths of my closet until finally I got so sick that I had enough.

 

But now, I have been repeating the lesson, the lesson I should have gotten in December when I packed my bags and moved out. I’m a strong woman, but sometimes my 5th chakra - communication - gets stuck.

 

The fear of speaking my truth and asking for what I want in relationships manifests as weight gain, a sluggish metabolism, and soreness around the butterfly gland in my neck - the thyroid.

 

Basically, holding my fear inside brings stress to my whole glandular system and when I don't release that stress by speaking freely, the blockages bring up my autoimmune hypothyroid symptoms.

 

It’s not crazy that energetically we are so aligned with our emotions that our physical bodies can either hurt or heal depending on how we are living our life. We see this every day with stress and how being chronically stressed affects our health.

The same concept holds true for the inability to express ourselves - creatively in our work, honestly with our business partners or clients, or in our relationships.

Before I left my 6-year relationship, I hadn’t gotten my period for 2 years.

I was doing everything right - or so I thought. I took every diagnostic test I could, blood tests, ultrasounds… I even thought I had cancer. Nothing was wrong, maybe a benign cyst or two but nothing to be concerned about down there - phew. I ate a fertility-boosting diet, took all the supplements recommended by my holistic OBGYN, of course practiced yoga every day, and surrounded myself with all my best girlfriends who were getting their period in hopes I would get mine too - since we women know that our flow sync up when we spend a lot of time together.

 

Nothing worked.

 

Until I left the relationship.

 

BOOM. Got my period a few weeks later on the NEW MOON on Christmas Eve. Divine clockwork.

A Christmas Miracle!

 

It was as if my body was saying “This was not the person to be fertile with, you were in a very unhealthy relationship. I’m not letting you even have the slightest chance of having a baby enter the world in this situation. Not a fat chance, honey.”

 

To me, this Christmas gift was clear evidence that the mind-body-soul connection really was something I needed to start listening to.

 

So now, when I feel my thyroid sluggish and that stubborn weight gain appear even when I’m doing all the right things nutritionally and through my super healthy lifestyle - I know it has nothing to do with how many avocados I did or didn’t eat.

 

Well, it totally makes sense that these symptoms are all manifestations of me not communicating to the men I have met since December… each situation the same thing: I have been afraid to speak up, to ask what he wants, to say what I want, or to simply just express my needs - or fears - around intimacy and commitment. So when any of the situations have gotten into the unclear zone, I have detached and let the situation fade away.

 

But I don’t do that with my career or any other aspect of my life!

 

Last night, my teacher shined a light right there, she called me out. She’s not letting me repeat this pattern with the next relationship - because clearly there is a very special dude who has been hanging out somewhere, waiting for me - I truly believe that.

 

He’s got to be there with his mala and yoga mat, waiting to take me out for some green juice and stay up late with a cup of chai talking about life under the stars…

 

But I will lose him without a doubt if I repeat and repeat and repeat this pattern of self-sabotage.

 

Have all the magical experiences in my life happened because I just take the backseat and watch the scenery, speechless? No way.

 

I am resolving this lesson, once and for all.

 

I owe it to my health.

 

I am worth it.

 

I know it won’t be easy, because it was a lesson that keeps repeating, and once we allow the lessons to repeat, they get that much harder to stop. I am ready and excited to meet the man who is so excited and ready to share all the magic of life together, who wants in just as much as I do. Who’s doing his work, and is ready to evolve together.


For that to happen, I absolutely have to communicate fearlessly.

I’ve got to speak up with conscious confidence.


We all do.

Must-have tools to heal my autoimmune condition, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis {A look inside my pantry}

As a therapeutic natural chef, I’ve witnessed the healing magic that can be created in the kitchen and know the importance of having the right tools behind every intention. The knife for carving a chicken is not right for peeling the fine zest from a lemon.  A whisk for whipping egg whites into a billowy cloud is not the same tool that’s needed to stir a 10-gallon stockpot of soup. Tools enable us to work more efficiently, create results, and make our lives easier when we know how to use them and can align our intentions with the results we are looking to achieve.  

 

This philosophy extends to all aspects of life including our journey to achieve vibrant health and sustained well-being.  We may use certain tools every day such as supplements, green juicing, meditation or yoga, while others such as sauna, colonics, or gallbladder flushes may wait on the shelf until the time is right.

 

In my perpetual thirst for knowledge surrounding my autoimmune condition, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, I experimented with almost every tool under the sun to create a robust toolbox.  Each one a supportive friend there at the right time, to hold my hand and whisper what I needed to hear, never jealous when I needed to visit with someone else.  I have learned through the years that there’s not one magic quick fix that will undo the damage we have done to our bodies.  Healing is an ongoing process that requires self-love, self-compassion, forgiveness, dedication to wellness, and patience. Healing takes time, and a constant reminder that you are worth the effort!  

 

While many tools fell to the bottom of the box, there is one that never left my side - a tool that was there for me on my wedding day and through the birth of both of my children and that continues to support me each morning when I wake up and each night before I fall into dreamland.  My most devoted tools are my essential oils - they have been my go to support for years.  I first fell in love during my studies at the California School of Herbal Studies, spending hours in the herb garden, getting to know the plants, and learning about their amazing healing potential.  I then got my own essential oil still and cultivated my favorites on my ranch.  The excitement and potential danger of a boiling still pushing steam through the flowers or leaves I had grown, then using cool spring water to condense the steam back to hydrosol was a gratifying experience.  It also gave me a real appreciation for the sweet little bottles of essential oils you can just buy off the shelf at your local health food store and an understanding of the higher cost of buying pure therapeutic grade oils.  It takes an unfathomable 2,160,000 rose petals to make 1 ounce of rose essential oil!  Another amazing fact: The healing potential of one drop of pure essential peppermint oil equals 25 cups of peppermint tea!


When I was presented with the allopathic model for my autoimmune condition, my mind quickly began to race through my memory files from herb school searching for the notes on thyroid health. I knew it would be a tool that would help me to find balance again.


The art and science of using essential plant oils in therapeutic treatments dates back to ancient history, from 7000 to 4000 BC. Oils from olive and sesame were thought to have been combined with fragrant plants to create the original Neolithic ointments.

After learning she had a thyroid condition, Tiana chose not to accept the medical model's opinion of her future. This pushed her to follow her long standing passion for the study of physiology and functional nutrition, graduating as a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.

The secret to my yoga glow {and a sweet giveaway for you}

 

Summertime is upon us, and often our skin takes a beating from generous sun exposure, humidity, chlorine and salt water. Extra skincare TLC is a very important part of my self-care ritual, especially during the summer monts.

In addition to a diet of all organic, gluten-free, dairy-free whole foods {and lots of green juice}, I treat my skin with extra love so you can spot my yoga glow from a mile away. Everyone has been asking my secrets, and I'm delighted to share them with you, so you, too can have a sexy radiant glow from head to toe. 

Here are my top five tips for glowing, radiant skin for summertime {and all year long}!

 

1. Exfoliate.

 

Dry brushing is your skin’s best friend. A daily self-massage with a body brush before a shower promotes exfoliation, reduction of cellulite, and stimulates the lymphatic system, boosting immune function. Remember always to stroke towards your heart in small, circular motions. Shower afterward so you can wash off all the dead skin you rake off. My go-to natural scrub is a DIY mixture of organic raw honey, Himalayan sea salt, jojoba oil, and essential oils of lavender, rose, and sandalwood. Choose essential oils {my favorite are DoTerra essential oils} and scrub from head to toe each day to remove dead skin and promote smooth, radiant, even skin.

 

2. Moisturize.

 

After exfoliating and taking a refreshing shower, moisturize with a chemical-free lotion or body oil. The skin is the body’s largest organ and takes in 60% of what you put on it, so why put anything other than pure, organic love on your body? My favorite summertime indulgence is massaging my body in pure virgin cold-pressed coconut oil after a shower or bath. I love smelling like summer, and the glow from coconut oil is simply beautiful. If you tend to have very oily skin, avoid your face and scalp. Otherwise, go for it! Raw, organic virgin Coconut Oil is my favorite after-sun remedy and is highly effective for treating sunburn. Mix with some pure aloe vera gel, and your burn will heal into a lovely golden glow.

 

3. Sweat.

 

Whether it's on your yoga mat, a hike, a run, a cycle, or a swim, regular exercise brightens your complexion and improves the health of your skin. Movement stimulates the lymphatic system, which carries away waste products from your cells. In your yoga self-care routine, focus on inversions such as headstand and shoulder stand to increase blood flow to the face and enhance lymphatic drainage.

 

4. Breathe.

 

This may be the simplest beauty routine of all! If you’ve ever been in my yoga classes or work with me one-on-one, you’ve heard me say this: “Deep inhale … deep exhale …" Well, one of the many reasons for this easy reminder is that breathing deeply and fully allows carbon dioxide to release from the lungs on the exhalations and allow the lungs to draw in more oxygen on the inhalation. This is why yoga alkalizes the body and prevents inflammation in the skin, as well as the immune and digestive systems!

 

5. Hydrate.

 

Aloe vera is my favorite supplement for promoting healthy skin. Remember to steer clear of the brightly colored aloe drinks you see in most conventional supermarkets, as these beverages contain a cocktail of artificial colorings, flavors, and preservatives. I also love making a simple refreshing cucumber-mint water and toting it around all day with me in my water bottle. Cucumber and mint are cooling and pacify inflammation. 

 

Maya Water Facial Mist keeps my yoga glow radiant in the most humid of days in NYC, even when I'm teaching under the sun. Maya Water is clean, mineral-rich and pH neutral water from Skogshorn in Hemsedal. An absolute must to revitalize and cleanse dry, tired skin exposed to pollution and environmental toxins! The more you spray, the more moisture you replenish your skin with, making wrinkles and fine lines appear reduced!

The most powerful tool to heal your thyroid {it may surprise you}

I am so excited to share with you a very powerful tool that helped me to overcome chronic Hashimoto’s Hypothyroid symptoms, in hope that it will empower you to heal your own thryoid conditions, too.

Do you feel like a “patient” who is on a strict regimen of supplements and pills just to function on a daily basis? I know I did. I woke up foggy and puffy every day, and forgot what it felt like to feel “normal.” In fact, I thought I never would again.

Until I found yoga and meditation. These ancient healing practices changed everything.

Maybe you’re not yet convinced?

Mind-Body medicine works by using the power of thoughts and emotion to control physical health. Simply channeling your mind to influence your body can be one of the greatest forces for health and longevity.

Even if you are doing all the nutritional and supplementation protocol suggested by your medical practitioner, if your mind is not aligned with a state of healing, your body may not heal as quickly, or as strongly.

I have found through working with hundreds of clients that meditation can be a key ingredient to healing, especially when coupled with other Mind-Body therapies and practices, to help maintain a balance in the body. Just as a house will fall to the ground without its foundation, your body can often become chronically sick without a mind focused on health and happiness.

I believe that every person has the power to realize consciousness, the ability to take responsibility, and a desire to find self-love and self-healing. Meditation will help with this.

From this space of self-love, you will naturally gravitate towards healing foods, exercise and daily movement, and a lifestyle that will help you feel alive, healthy, vibrant, and wonderful. You will gravitate towards the means to keep your body alive, prevent sickness, and experience a profound mind-body connection.

During these silent moments in meditation, we become in tune with our selves while gaining a sense of trust in making our own decisions.

Through my own journey to achieve wellness, mediation intuitively has helped me to choose which practices resonate with me to become the glowing, luminous woman I am today. The healthy, plant-based diet I eat, the green juices I drink, and the natural supplements and energy work have become second nature.

I have found that clients who meditate no longer need to self-sabotage their current health and happiness, but are empowered to change all aspects of their lives when they truly begin to move to a space of self-love. Awareness is the first step towards good health and your ideal body.

There is nothing more important than truly believing – with all your soul - that the healthy treatments you choose will work. Your belief sets the intention, and from that intention the healing process occurs, and then a disease-free state can manifest in your body.

Meditation can help set that healing intention. During meditation your mind is silent so you no longer have any fear-based thoughts. In a place without this thought, you can be completely detached from the outcome and remove any resistance that may be causing a discord during the healing process.

Today, I encourage you to sit patiently with yourself, look in the mirror, and ask the simplest of questions:

“What about my thought patterns, personal journey, struggles, and life has prevented me accomplishing true health?"

Then, for 5 minutes, visualize yourself in perfect health and happiness to allow yourself to draw it into your life.

How does this feel in your body?

Every morning set aside 5 minutes to sit in silence. I’ve created an 11-minute Guided Throat Chakra healing meditation for you. This daily meditation helped me to send love and healing light to my thyroid rather than negativity and disdain for being “broken.”

If you feel unable to express yourself freely, or feel judged by others, you aren’t your authentic self, bottle things up inside because you are afraid to speak your truth, resist communicating out of fear, or can’t tap into or express your creative energy, then this meditation can help you break through those challenges and release the blocked energy that has been stagnant in your thyroid.

How I healed my Hashimoto's Hypothyroid condition {and how you can, too}

Hi there. I’m sitting in the hills in Hollywood, California, feeling pretty spectacular and inspired by the beauty and nature that surrounds me here...living the dream. But backtrack about a half decade ago, every day was an uphill battle against my body and I was not at all satisfied with my life. And I’m here to share my story to inspire you to reach this beautiful place inside you - and in the world.

 

My journey began when I was 16 years old, a very heavy sweater, just thinking about having to give a presentation and the armpits of my shirt would be soaked through. Bumps on my arms and legs. Feeling so sluggish, especially when I came down with Mono, the whole next year I felt chronically fatigued and skipped homecoming and senior events because I barely had energy to get out of bed. Thought I was depressed. Instead, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and given a large dose of Synthroid to take every morning on an empty stomach. I was told that would solve all the symptoms I was experiencing.


Fast forward a few years later to college. Always getting sinus infections and sore throats. Would go to the health center and be given antibiotics just to hush me. I’d be on antibiotics a few times a year. Z-pack was my homeboy. These magic pills would be a quick fix to the congestion, puffiness and brain fog that I would feel almost every day, especially around my biomedical engineering finals - so convenient.


When I’d travel, I carried a supply of Lactase, Pepto and Ex-Lax with me - all which I would take daily to deal with bloating, constipation, and post-meal nausea. On one particular spring break with my girlfriends, I went through an entire box of Ex-Lax because I went a week without elimination. I told myself this was “no big deal” because that is just what happens when “someone with Hypothyroid experiences” when traveling because constipation was just one of the symptoms I was stuck with for life. I never questioned.


Then along came NYC. After graduation, traded my Syracuse University lab coats for designer suits to complement my swanky desk job at Morgan Stanley, a prestigious investment bank. 14 hour days of staring at a computer screen, creating databases and coding macros that made Excel look archaic. I thought this was the American Dream. But it felt like anything but that. Staring at a computer screen made my head spin and I often experienced vertigo. To deal with the migraines, I took Excedrin nearly every day and to curb the stuffy and runny noses from the office air, I’d pop a Zyrtec with my Synthroid before I ate a box of cereal with soy milk. I thought I was doing all the right things, because no one told me any differently. I still felt awful, but every time I’d go to my endocrinologist - and I tried the best ones in New York - I was told the same thing - my levels looked fine, no nodules, the symptoms I was feeling were “normal” for those with hypothyoridism. And that was it.


I finally became fed up cabbing to work from the Upper East Side to Brooklyn everyday, spending $20 just to sit under florescent lights at a miserable job, just to cab back home after the sun set, to lay in my room in complete silence and darkness with an eye pillow over my eyes because I was so sensitive to light and sound. This couldn’t be “normal.”


So I kept seeking out New York City’s best and brightest endocrinologists. Finally, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Hypothyoriditis, which is the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism. Simply put, an autoimmune disorder is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. In Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the immune system attacks and kills thyroid cells. This “attack and destroy” can cause wild symptom swings from hypothyroid to hyperthyroid, and back. Each attack destroys more and more thyroid cells, until ultimately the patient becomes hypothyroid and starts a lifelong dependence on thyroid hormone medication.

 

Again, I was told that I would always have these symptoms and would just have to “deal with them.”

 

I thought to myself, “I studied Biomedical Engineering. Why can’t I be my own doctor? Why do I need to depend on thyroid medication? Clearly, this ‘dealing with it’ thing wasn’t working.”

 

I HAD ENOUGH. I was finally fed up with this band-aid approach to my own health. I would no longer live like a zombie walking around feeling awful, unfulfilled, and suppressed.

 

On a particularly stressful day at the office, I slipped out on my lunch break to a yoga studio down the street, one I had always passed, but on this day, felt called to check it out. I took my first class, expecting it to be a nice “break” in between my very intense (and very draining) spinning, running, and bootcamp routine that I had been doing every night to clear my head and numb my pain. Oh, but yoga was so much more than a “break” and felt completely different from anything else I was doing. After my first class, I was hooked. I didn’t quite know why, but I knew that I needed to keep going. The more I went, the more I began being introspective. Why was I always nauseous and dizzy after I ate something at work? Why would I experience sharp stomach pains after certain meals and have to unbutton my pants at my desk? Why were my migraines worse on certain days? Why was I able to take the train to work on some mornings instead of taking a cab? Why did I feel puffy and foggy on some days, while other days light and graceful on my yoga mat?

 

I began seeing patterns, and getting really excited about what this all meant. I began to take the first steps of being my own healer, instead of relying on test results and no clear direction. One of my teachers at the studio, Donnalynn Civello, was especially inspirational - her classes spoke to me and her nurturing touch provided me with this feeling I was lacking in my life - the feeling of being safe, comforted, and deeply loved. I felt very connected to this woman, and saw her as a role model, and she naturally became my mentor. I joined her cooking and nutritional classes and became very excited with the knowledge she provided. Instead of warming up prepared meals in the microwave, I began to experiment with blending soups and smoothies and instead of making pasta every night, I began spiralizing vegetables and creating creamy sauces with nuts and seeds. This was a whole new world to me, and as I began to feel better, I began to see that what I was putting in my body - and how I was treating it - was making a huge difference on how I felt.

 

This was only the beginning. But all major transformations must begin with a first step.

 

 

My teacher empowered me in a way that no medical doctors had done. This was the game-changer. And as I begin to experiment with food - cutting out dairy, gluten and soy, processed food, sugar, caffeine and alcohol, I began to realize their effects.

 

I began tapping into my former engineer. I began researching. What I found would change my life forever.

As I deepened my practice of yoga, pranayama (breath work), meditation, ayurveda, and self-care rituals, I tapped into my own inner healer and found my own inner goddess again.
